A distinctive period property in Watford featured original arched window openings that added significant character to its façade. However, the existing timber frames had severely deteriorated, with rotting sections, failed single glazing, and persistent draughts that made the rooms uncomfortable. The homeowners were keen to preserve the property’s unique architectural feature but wanted the benefits of modern thermal performance and low maintenance. The goal was to install bespoke arched uPVC windows in white to replicate the original curved design while delivering superior energy efficiency, security, and durability.

We supplied and installed bespoke arched white uPVC windows tailored to the property’s individual openings. Arched windows require specialist manufacturing to ensure the curve matches the existing brickwork precisely. The solution included:

• Side-hung casement openings with concealed friction hinges for ventilation
• A-rated double glazing with argon gas fill and low-E coating for superior thermal efficiency
• Thermally efficient uPVC profiles to reduce heat loss and eliminate condensation
• Multi-point locking systems with anti-snap cylinders and security handles
• Trickle vents concealed within the frame head to reduce condensation and improve indoor air quality
• Georgian bar inserts following the curve of the arch to enhance the traditional appearance

Installation Process

• Carried out a detailed pre-installation survey with precision laser measurements and templates taken of each arched opening
• Confirmed the exact radius and profile of each arch to ensure a perfect match with the existing brickwork
• Removed the original timber arched windows carefully to preserve surrounding brickwork, stone lintels, and internal plaster
• Disposed of all old frames and glass responsibly
• Inspected and prepared the structural openings, reveals, and sills
• Repaired any damaged brickwork or render around the arch where necessary
• Installed new bespoke arched uPVC frames using galvanised fixings and expanding foam
• Ensured the curved head aligned perfectly with the existing arch profile
• Fitted double-glazed sealed units with curved Georgian bars into each frame
• Applied internal and external silicone seals for full weatherproofing
• Adjusted all hinges, handles, and locking mechanisms for smooth operation
