A detached family home in Hemel Hempstead required a comprehensive glazing solution to brighten a dark rear extension and replace outdated windows throughout the property. The existing windows were draughty and inefficient, while the flat roof extension lacked natural light. The goal was to install flat skylights to flood the extension with daylight and replace all windows with high-performance aluminium units to improve comfort, energy efficiency, and kerb appeal.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed a combination of flat glass skylights and white aluminium windows tailored to the property. The solution included:

Flat Skylights:

• Thermally broken aluminium frames to prevent condensation and heat loss
• Double-glazed units with low-E coating and argon gas fill
• Walk-on rated glass (up to 150kg per square metre) for safe roof access
• Anti-slip coating on the external glass surface
• Fixed glazed panels with electric opening mechanism for ventilation
• Tapered insulated upstands to ensure proper water run-off

Aluminium Windows:

• A-rated double glazing with argon gas fill and low-E coating
• Side-hung casement openings with concealed friction hinges
• Multi-point locking systems with anti-snap cylinders
• Trickle vents to reduce condensation and improve indoor air quality
• Reinforced frames for added strength and durability
• Matching white sills, trims, and hardware for a seamless finish

Installation Process

• Conducted site survey and measured all window openings and flat roof areas
• Coordinated with the homeowners to confirm placement and access
• Removed existing windows carefully to preserve brickwork and internal plaster
• Disposed of all waste materials responsibly
• Inspected and prepared lintels, reveals, and sills for window installation
• Installed new aluminium window frames using galvanised fixings and expanding foam
• Fitted double-glazed sealed units into each window frame
• Cut roof openings for skylights and installed upstands with proper insulation
• Applied waterproof membrane flashing around the upstand perimeters
• Lifted flat skylight frames into position and secured to upstands
• Installed double-glazed sealed units into skylight frames
• Applied external flashing for weatherproof sealing
• Tested electric opening mechanisms on skylights
• Adjusted all window hinges, handles, and locking mechanisms
• Completed internal plastering and decoration around skylight reveals
• Completed thorough clean of all glass, frames, and surrounding areas
