Schüco Bi-Fold Door Installation

A substantial detached family home in the historic market town of Harpenden had recently completed a large rear extension, creating an expansive open-plan kitchen and living area. However, the existing patio doors failed to maximise the stunning garden views and limited the connection between the interior and the beautifully landscaped outdoor space. The homeowners wanted a premium, dramatic glazing solution that would flood the new extension with natural light and provide effortless garden access. The goal was to install a Schüco aluminium bi-fold door system to create a sleek, modern focal point, enhance the property’s contemporary aesthetic, and add significant value to the home.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed a Schüco ASS 70 FD (Folding Door) bi-fold system tailored to the extension opening. The ASS 70 FD is a thermally insulated aluminium bi-fold door system that impresses with narrow face widths and offers outstanding weathertightness for outdoor areas. The solution included:

• Schüco ASS 70 FD bi-fold doorwith ultra-slim aluminium profiles (minimum face width of 120mm) for uninterrupted garden views
• Multi-panel configuration (customised to the opening) with a maximum vent width of 1,500mm and height of 3,000mm per panel
• Bottom-mounted stainless steel rollers for whisper-quiet, effortless folding operation
• Thermally broken profiles achieving U-values as low as 1.3 W/(m²K) for exceptional energy efficiency and condensation control
• Low-threshold cill with a flat threshold and rebate gasket for step-free garden access
• Schüco multi-point locking system with burglar resistance up to RC2 level for enhanced security
• High-performance double glazing with 4mm toughened outer glass, 20mm argon-filled cavity, and 4mm toughened inner glass with Low-E coating
• Powder-coated finish in a colour of the homeowners’ choice to complement the extension’s exterior
• Concealed drop-down weather seals for superior weathertightness and draught protection
• Matching handles and hardware for a unified, premium finish

Installation Process

• Conducted a detailed site survey with precision laser measurement of the extension opening
• Coordinated with the homeowners to finalise the panel configuration, colour selection, and hardware choices
• Checked structural lintel and floor levels for proper alignment, ensuring the opening was square and true
• Installed steel reinforcement where required to support the bi-fold system
• Lifted the Schüco ASS 70 FD door frame into position using precision packers
• Mechanically fixed the frame to the new masonry and timber studwork, ensuring zero movement
• Hung each door panel and adjusted bottom rollers for perfect alignment and smooth operation
• Fitted double-glazed sealed units into all panels
• Installed the Schüco multi-point locking mechanism and tested all locking points
• Spray-foamed all perimeter gaps with high-expansion insulation foam
• Applied internal and external silicone seals for an airtight, watertight finish
• Tested folding and sliding operation across all panels multiple times
• Completed a thorough clean of all glass, tracks, frames, and surrounding areas
