Flat Skylight Installation

A ground-floor extension in Radlett had a solid flat roof that blocked natural light, leaving the kitchen and dining area feeling dark and uninviting. The residents wanted to introduce daylight without undertaking major structural work. The goal was to install a flat skylight to brighten the space, improve ventilation, and create a more pleasant living environment.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed a high-performance flat glass skylight designed specifically for flat roof extensions. The solution included:

• Thermally broken aluminium frame to prevent condensation and heat loss
• Double-glazed unit with low-E coating and argon gas fill
• Walk-on rated glass (up to 150kg per square metre) for safe roof access
• Anti-slip coating on the external glass surface
• Fixed glazed panel with an optional electric opening mechanism for ventilation
• Skylight powder-coated in white to match the interior ceiling
• Tapered insulated upstands to ensure proper water run-off

Installation Process

• Conducted site survey and measured the flat roof opening dimensions
• Coordinated with the homeowners to confirm placement and access
• Cut the roof opening and installed timber or aluminium upstands with proper insulation
• Applied waterproof membrane flashing around the upstand perimeter
• Lifted the flat skylight frame into position on the upstand
• Secured the frame using mechanical fixings through the upstand structure
• Installed the double-glazed sealed unit into the frame
• Applied external lead or aluminium flashing for a weatherproof seal
• Tested the electric opening mechanism (where specified) for smooth operation
• Completed internal plastering and decoration around the skylight reveal
• Cleaned all glass thoroughly internally and externally
