Project Overview
A semi-detached home in the historic market town of Tring required a rear extension that would maximize a limited footprint. The homeowners wanted to create a bright, open-plan kitchen and dining area but were constrained by the property’s semi-detached layout. The goal was to install a lean-to glass roof—a mono-pitch structure that “leans” against the existing house—to flood the new space with natural light and create a seamless connection to the garden.
Our Solution
We designed and installed a bespoke lean-to glass roof system tailored to the extension. Lean-to roofs are the ideal choice when roof height is tight or the footprint is wide and shallow. The solution included:
- Thermally broken aluminium framework to prevent heat loss and eliminate condensation
- High-performance double glazing with low-E coating and argon gas fill, achieving U-values as low as 1.0 W/m²K for superior energy efficiency
- Self-cleaning glass option to reduce maintenance and keep the roof looking pristine
- Integrated gutter system concealed within the framework to manage rainwater run-off
- Powder-coated finish in a RAL colour of the homeowners’ choice to complement the property’s exterior
- Optional electric or manual opening vents for natural ventilation
- Plastered internal reveals for a clean, finished appearance
- Optional LED lighting track integrated into the framework
Installation Process
- Conducted a detailed site survey to assess the existing structure and measure the extension area
- Coordinated with the homeowners to finalise the roof pitch, dimensions, and colour specifications
- Removed the existing flat roof covering (if applicable) and prepared the opening
- Inspected and repaired existing roof timbers and wall plates where necessary
- Installed steel support beams where required to accommodate the glass roof
- Installed a weatherproof barrier and flashing to prevent leaks at the wall intersection
- Fitted the aluminium perimeter frame and support beams, securing them to existing wall plates
- Lifted double-glazed roof panels into position and sealed all glass-to-glass and glass-to-frame joints with silicone
- Installed integrated gutter system and downpipes
- Applied external flashing for weatherproof sealing
- Completed internal plastering around the roof perimeter
- Installed optional LED lighting track and electric opening vents
- Cleaned all glass thoroughly internally and externally
