Lantern Glass Roof Installation

A detached family home in Milton Keynes had recently completed a rear extension to create an open-plan kitchen and dining area. However, the solid flat roof made the space feel dark and enclosed, failing to maximise the potential of the new room. The homeowners wanted a stunning glazing solution that would flood the extension with natural light and add a touch of architectural elegance. The goal was to install a lantern glass roof to transform the extension into a bright, welcoming, and contemporary living space.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed a bespoke lantern glass roof system designed for the extension. The solution included:

• Aluminium perimeter frame with thermally broken profiles for energy efficiency
• Pitched glass roof with double-glazed panels for maximum light transmission
• Self-cleaning glass option for reduced maintenance
• Central ridge design with clean, modern sightlines
• Double-glazed units with low-E coating and argon gas fill
• Integrated gutter system concealed within the framework
• White powder-coated finish to match the interior ceiling
• Plastered internal reveals for a seamless, finished look
• Optional LED lighting track integrated into the framework

Installation Process

• Conducted site survey and assessed the existing extension structure
• Coordinated with the homeowners to confirm placement and design
• Removed the existing flat roof covering and prepared the opening
• Installed steel support beams where required for the lantern roof
• Fitted the aluminium perimeter frame and ridge beam
• Lifted double-glazed glass panels into position on the frame
• Sealed all glass-to-glass and glass-to-frame joints with silicone
• Installed concealed gutter system and downpipes
• Applied external flashing for weatherproof sealing
• Completed internal plastering around the roof perimeter
• Installed optional LED lighting track into the framework
• Cleaned all glass thoroughly internally and externally
