Flat Skylights Installation

A commercial office building in Canary Wharf required a solution to bring natural light into a poorly lit internal corridor and breakout area on the top floor. The existing flat roof offered an opportunity to introduce daylight, but the space suffered from a dark, enclosed atmosphere that affected employee wellbeing. The goal was to install flat skylights to flood the area with natural light, reduce reliance on artificial lighting, and create a more pleasant, productive work environment.

Our Solution

We supplied and installed high-performance commercial-grade flat glass skylights designed for the office building’s flat roof. The solution included:

• Thermally broken aluminium frames to prevent condensation and heat loss
• Double-glazed units with low-E coating and argon gas fill for energy efficiency
• Walk-on rated glass (up to 200kg per square metre) for safe roof access during maintenance
• Anti-slip coating on the external glass surface
• Opaque or diffused glazing option to reduce glare while maximising light transmission
• Electric opening mechanisms for automated ventilation (BMS compatible)
• Tapered insulated upstands to ensure proper water run-off
• Powder-coated finish in dark grey (RAL 7016) to match the building’s exterior

Installation Process

• Conducted site survey and structural assessment of the existing flat roof
• Coordinated with building management to schedule out-of-hours installation
• Removed existing roof covering and prepared the opening dimensions
• Installed steel support framework where required for larger skylight spans
• Fitted timber or aluminium upstands with proper insulation and tapered firrings
• Applied waterproof membrane flashing around the upstand perimeter
• Lifted flat skylight frames into position on the upstands using precision packers
• Secured frames using mechanical fixings through the upstand structure
• Installed double-glazed sealed units into each frame
• Applied external lead or aluminium flashing for a weatherproof seal
• Tested electric opening mechanisms and connected to BMS where specified
• Completed internal plastering and decoration around skylight reveals
• Cleaned all glass thoroughly internally and externally
